| I opened The Mermaid's Perch n May 2005, inspired by my visit to a now-defunct restaurant on Sanibel Island, Florida. I fell in love with the mermaid artifacts that decorated the place floor to ceiling and began my own quest for all things mermaid. When I decided to open my little store, the whimsical and artful side of mermaids was a natural to build our offerings around. Looking for a local connection to Ludington, I decided on perch -- the little fish that is my favorite thing to order in our local restaurants. |  |

And, then there is the building. It's claim to fame is not architectural, but as a piece of Ludington's cultural history. It was home to the original Bach's bakery. Many locals come into the store regaling us with tales of the weekend mornings they came in when they were kids to sample a special donut or pastry or chocolate...yum...yum. |

If you've been to Ludington, then you know its small and precious wonders. You can't blame anything on the traffic here (unless maybe the Badger was delayed crossing over from Manitowoc, Wisconsin.) You can blame it, however, on the deer or wild turkeys or tractor crossing the road, the eagle you spotted out at First Curve, the dune hike you decided to take through the State Park, or an afternoon of tubing down the Big Sauble and into the BIG LAKE, or running into someone you know at The Bookmark or Luciano's or Chef John's, or any number of other rural distractions that you can generally find time for. |
